Avios Strategy
How Much Is 1 Avios Worth?
The honest answer: anywhere from 0.4p to 6p+ per point — depending entirely on how you redeem. This guide shows you exactly where to find that top-end value.

What Determines Avios Value?
Avios are a distance-based currency used across British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, and several other Oneworld programmes. The value you extract depends on three factors:
- 1.
Cabin class — Business and First class redemptions always produce higher pence-per-Avios because the cash alternative is so expensive. Redeeming 68,000 Avios for a £3,500 Club World seat delivers roughly 5p per Avios; the same Avios in Economy buys a much cheaper seat.
- 2.
Peak vs Off-Peak — BA and Iberia charge 50% more Avios on peak travel dates. Redeeming off-peak roughly doubles your pence-per-point compared to peak.
- 3.
Route — Zone-based pricing means some routes punch above their weight. Short-haul business class (e.g. LHR–MAD in Club Europe) often produces outstanding value because the cash price is disproportionately high versus the Avios cost.
Avios Value by Redemption Type — 2025/2026
Values calculated using real cash fares vs Avios cost (taxes excluded from both sides for a like-for-like comparison).
| Redemption Type | Typical Avios | Cash Equivalent | Value per Avios | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LHR–MAD Economy (Off-Peak) | 6,500 | ~£80 | 1.2p | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| LHR–MAD Club Europe (Off-Peak) | 11,250 | ~£300 | 2.7p | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| LHR–JFK Economy (Off-Peak) | 26,000 | ~£350 | 1.3p | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| LHR–JFK Club World (Off-Peak) | 68,000 | ~£3,500 | 5.1p | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| DOH–LHR QSuite Business (Off-Peak) | 70,000 | ~£3,800 | 5.4p | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| LHR–SYD First (Off-Peak) | 170,000 | ~£10,000 | 5.9p | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Avios Shop (retail vouchers) | variable | face value | 0.4–0.5p | ⭐ |
| Upgrade Vouchers (cash fare base) | variable | cabin diff | 0.5–0.8p | ⭐⭐ |
| Hotel stays (Avios Hotels) | variable | room rate | 0.5–0.7p | ⭐⭐ |
Cash fares are indicative and vary by booking window, season, and demand. Values exclude carrier-imposed surcharges (YQ) which apply equally to cash fares.
How to Calculate Your Own Avios Value
The formula is simple:
Value per Avios = (Cash fare − Taxes on award) ÷ Avios required
Multiply by 100 to get pence. Always compare like-for-like: exclude taxes from both sides.
Example — LHR to New York Club World off-peak:
- Cash fare (Club World): £3,500
- Award cost: 68,000 Avios + £600 in taxes/surcharges
- Net saving from using Avios: £3,500 − £600 = £2,900
- Value per Avios: £2,900 ÷ 68,000 = 4.26p
Whether 4.26p is 'good' depends on how you acquired those Avios. If you earned them on a credit card at a rate of £1 spend = 1.5 Avios, you effectively paid 0.67p per Avios to accumulate them — a margin of 3.6p per point is outstanding.
The 3 Best Avios Sweet Spots in 2025/2026
Transatlantic Club World off-peak
68,000 Avios each way (LHR–USA/Canada off-peak). Cash fares regularly £2,500–£4,000. This is the headline sweet spot that attracts most high-value redeemers to BA Executive Club. Book well ahead — off-peak award seats release early and disappear fast.
Typical value: 4–6p per Avios
QSuite via Qatar Privilege Club
Qatar prices its own metal awards with Qpoints (earned separately) but Avios from partner programmes — including BA Executive Club — can also book Qatar flights. DOH–LHR and DOH–JFK in QSuite business class frequently deliver 5p+ per Avios, with softer surcharge loads than many BA routes.
Typical value: 5–6p per Avios
Intra-Europe Club Europe (short-haul business)
Often overlooked because 'it's just Europe.' But Club Europe cash fares — especially on popular business routes like LHR–AMS, LHR–ZRH, LHR–CDG — regularly cost £400–£600 one-way. Redeeming 11,250–13,500 Avios off-peak for a seat that costs £500 cash delivers 3–4p per point without ever leaving Europe.
Typical value: 2.5–4p per Avios
Redemptions to Avoid (or at Least Think Twice About)
Gift cards and retail vouchers typically peg Avios at 0.4–0.5p each. If your Avios are sitting idle and you desperately need the cash equivalent, this is a last resort — not a strategy.
Hotel redemption rates have improved slightly but still rarely break 0.8p per Avios. Points currencies with hotel programs (Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors) tend to offer better hotel value in their native programs.
Combining peak pricing (50% more Avios) with routes that carry heavy carrier surcharges (YQ) dramatically compresses value. A Club World LHR–JFK seat at peak (102,000 Avios) + £700 in taxes on a route where cash Business is £2,800 works out to just 2.1p per Avios — still decent, but a 60% haircut vs the off-peak sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is 1 Avios worth in pounds?▾
In 2025/2026, 1 Avios is worth approximately 0.4p at worst (retail vouchers) and 6p+ at best (business/first class long-haul off-peak redemptions). A commonly cited benchmark is around 1p per Avios for economy redemptions and 3–5p for business class.
Are Avios worth more than other airline miles?▾
Avios are competitive with other major loyalty currencies for business class long-haul redemptions. The key advantage is flexibility — Avios are shared across British Airways, Iberia, Qatar, Finnair, Aer Lingus, and Vueling, giving many more redemption options than a single-airline program. The main drawback versus currencies like United MileagePlus or American AAdvantage is the carrier-imposed surcharges on BA metal, which reduce net pence-per-point.
Should I buy Avios?▾
Buying Avios at the standard price of ~1.5–1.7p each only makes sense if you can redeem them at 3p+ — typically business class long-haul. If you need a small top-up to reach an award threshold, buying makes sense. Speculative bulk purchases are harder to justify unless you have a confirmed high-value redemption lined up.
Do Avios expire?▾
In British Airways Executive Club, Avios expire if your account is inactive for 36 consecutive months. Any earn or redemption activity resets the clock. Qatar Privilege Club has similar rules. The safest approach is to earn or spend at least once per year — even a small credit card purchase through a partner earns a handful of Avios and resets expiry.
What is the best way to use Avios for maximum value?▾
The consistent top answer is transatlantic business class off-peak (68,000 Avios LHR–USA one-way in Club World). QSuite redemptions via partner programs are a close second. For off-peak availability, search 330+ days out from your target dates. Book immediately when seats open — off-peak inventory is limited and fills within hours on popular routes.
How do peak and off-peak dates affect Avios value?▾
BA and Iberia charge 50% more Avios on peak travel dates. This directly halves your pence-per-point. For example: LHR–JFK Club World costs 68,000 off-peak but 102,000 at peak. If the cash fare is identical (say £3,500), off-peak gives 5.1p per Avios while peak gives only 3.4p. Travelling off-peak is one of the highest-impact choices you can make for Avios value.
